Types Of Hosting For The Web And Intranet

December 8th, 2009

There are a number of different types of hosting for the Web and Internet these days. This wasn’t always the case just a decade or so ago, but the types and varieties that are available nowadays is truly impressive. Basically the term “hosting” refers to a World Wide Web or Internet hosting service that can enable people to make their own website for hosting on the World Wide Web.

At its heart, hosting is a way to provide a certain amount of space on a server. Web hosts either lease or own these servers and also worked to provide Internet connectivity from what is called a “data center.” In terms of hosting, Internet host providers offer an extremely wide variety of hosting services today. They can range from very basic to very involved.

Typically, hosting services fall into a number of categories. The most common kind of hosting is free web hosting services. Many times, this kind of hosting is supported by the advertising that one must allow to be placed on the website that will be hosted on the servers under the control of these types of web hosts. In many cases, free web hosting is limited in comparison to other types.

A very popular type of hosting service these days are the services offered by a shared web host. With this kind of hosting, a website is placed onto the same server that many other websites also share. This number can run from hundreds to thousands of sites on the same server. Usually, the website domain will share from a common server pool when it comes to certain items such as RAM or CPU.

For those who want something a bit more control over the server that will connect websites to the World Wide Web, a good option is to go for a managed hosting service. With this kind, a website user will get his or her own server but will not get complete administrative control over it. They will be allowed to manage their own data through use of file transfer protocols (FTP), though.

Many people who want full and complete control over all of their websites or just a single website tend to go for dedicated hosting services. With them, the website user and owner will get his own server and complete control over its functioning. The user will not actually own the server, though, but will have complete administrative control right down to the very basic administrative functions.

There are several other types of hosting that can be found, and some are more applicable to those who look at websites as more of a hobby while others are for people and organizations that have very specific goals and aims for all of the websites they own. In all cases, though, hosting is needed in order to gain access to the World Wide Web and the Internet.
