amazon hosting costs

IF you wrote a book would you try to get it e published (and on amazon.com) or do it the old fashioned way?
IF you wrote a book would you try to get it e published (and on amazon.com) or do it the old fashioned way?
The old fashioned way takes longer and bigger rejection, but if accepted has advertising funds and book tours. E publishing (Internet publishing) costs you money to start it, you have to pay like $200 for amazon.com to host it, and pay to advertise.
THAT BEING SAID, WHICH WOULD YOU PREFER AND WHY?
FEEL FREE TO ADD OPINIONS AND OTHER THINGS.
Please be detailed.
I belong to a loop of published romance authors. In a recent discussion of how much money books make being e-published, a dozen different authors who have published their books this way agreed that on average they earned less than $500 per book, and that amount was paid out over a two year period. On average, the first-time romance novelist with a traditional publisher earns $5,000 on their book.
Most authors do have to arrange their own book tours, which are usually just local signings. Most advertising funds the publisher puts out are for Advanced Review Copies of the book sent to major print and online reviewers, and for premium space in book stores. Yes, it costs to have your book displayed in those center aisles of Borders and B&N!
Also, e-publishers (and vanity presses) do not distribute your book. The author has to assume this responsibility, and few have the resources or contacts to do an adequate job.
Finally, this is strictly my personal opinion, but I have yet to see an e published book that is the same quality (writing, editing, etc) as a traditionally published book. I keep hearing that e publishing is the wave of the future, but until they can turn out a quality product on par with what is available in print, I do not see it happening.
